Personal Style: Your Judgement Is Irrelevant

July 28, 2011

One of the very first things I learned while discovering personal style was that having confidence (first) and being genuinely comfortable (second) in what you decide to wear are two pivotal things. If a person is being themselves, wearing what makes them happy, and trying to look their best, this is something that can't be judged. Sure, they may not be into clean, crisp tailored suits or rolling their chinos to flash a little ankle, but they may care enough to look presentable to the world in their own unique way. Isn't that what personal style is all about?

We all had to start somewhere. If you ever purchased a style guide or fashion magazine that's given you advice on how to enhance your personal style, that's called needing assistance. Think about this before you go to judging the man who still wears square-toed lace-ups or shirts that are ill-fitting. Chances are, you were once in his shoes, wearing the same things at one point. Just because you took the time to dig deeper about presenting yourself in a cleaner, more dapper manner does not give you the right to nit-pick at one's entire outfit. Instead, be kind and offer advice. Besides, it doesn't matter how well-dressed you are if you left your manners in the closet.

Personal style is about evolution and development as well. AndrĂ© "3000" Benjamin and Kanye West both evolved their personal styles. I can remember seeing AndrĂ© 3000 in shoulder pads and many other wild outfits, but he changed and began to go for a much cleaner aesthetic. Kanye West—the self-proclaimed 'Lo head—used to wear huge, billowy polo shirts. Both of these men, now style icons to many, were comfortable in what they used to wear; their style of dress just heavily evolved.

I do not believe style should or can be judged. With each person in the world, there is a different way of dress one may approach. While there are many extraneous rules on the subject of style—silly ones like no white after Labor Day—not many of them are followed, and this allows for an individual to showcase their style through character, individualism, and uniqueness. Originality is another important aspect of style…shunning a person's way of dress to be judged. There is no right or wrong style—only people expressing themselves through the way they do things. Style is limitless and the uncreated is waiting to be created. How can you judge that?
